Help! Novice needs serious filemaker help

Featured Replies

I am not sure where to begin . . . and I am not sure if this can get resolved over a few posts, but here's my plea for help:

I have a database of screenplays (someone else before me set this up). I need to add a category of sorts, to say from whom the screenplay came--from person A, B, or C etc. I am sort of familiar with how to add fields in layout mode . . . And the real puzzling thing is that we have lots of different views that sort the data--how to get this new category to appear in all these views?

We have a view that shows all the screenplays that have come in to the office in the last 7 days. We have one that shows what is still pending. How can I add the category mentioned above in the database so that it appears as a field in all my other views?

Help! If you can get me through this, I'll mail you a candy bar of your choice! I am open to talking on the phone if you are . . .

A million thanks ahead of time.

Yours,

David

So you added the field to the layout and it doesn't appear on screen?

OK let's start simple. So in layout mode I can drag the field box and create a new field. But the choices I get for "specifying the field" are all the other fields that already exist. How do I create a brand new field, one that will appear in every record?

Thanks!

David

If you are using FileMaker 6 as your profile indicates, look for Define Fields under the File menu. (In FileMaker 9 it's under File > Manage > Database.)

The keyboard shortcut is control-shift-D no matter what version you're using.

Thanks, thats a good place to start. I appreciate it!
