Hi There

I have come across this solution for moving FH Pro 6.0 to 7 and above. Has any one used this product?

http://www.dotcomsolutionsinc.net/products/fmpro_migrator/fmpro_migrator_features_benefits.html

and what are the pit falls of shifting a large FH6.0 data base of multiple table to FM7 and above

regards

D

I talked to the people from .Com some years ago, and they say that their tools mainly are aimed at getting the old data over and not as much the structure... which means all your denormalization attempts is likely to cause problems - we do all from time to time make small nifty workarounds, and sincerer hopes for proper machined interpretation is too far fetched.

Filemakers approaches have changed radically with the introduction of fm7 and you will never utilize the tool fully with a migrarted solution even if it manages to toss all talbes into one file will issues be latent.

If you take Hernandez (the Mere Mortals... geezer) advice on database designs, should the legacy base's relational structure never ever be taken for granted, oftentimes have so much efford been put into the solution to cope with historic deficiencies in the tool that the transfer would make thing even worse.

Rebuild the solution from scratch if the time allows, and do not expect miracles ...as every things else in this world is the reality that things requires spit and polish, urge and dedication.

thanks for your feed back

we are really looking for a product that we can merge 20 tables (FMP 6.0) to one FHPro 7.0 data base

do you know of any products that will do this? or strategy to get there?

Cheers

FileMaker Robot requires a DDR (database design report). If you ran DDR and looked at under the options available, you will see that it only provides the Structure of the files, no data.

You can download a demo of FMRobot, which will allow a few look see, and provide a lot of information about how it will work with your files.

Even if you end up going a different direction, it is worth the time spent. Also, the Support is very good, or at least it was when I went through the exercise.

"does it import the data of the tables? and will the script work between the tables when they are migrated"

Importing the data is the *easy* part of the migration.

It's all of the other stuff that needs to be done - conversion issues, optimisations etc -- that are goind to be the hard work.
