I am comletely new to Web Companion and CDML. Just started up reading on it, and I see that some people advocate XML rather than traditional CDML.

I'd like to hear your opinions about it. If I am starting from scratch is XML better to learn than CDML? Will they accomplish the same thing?

Thank you all.

From my experience CDML is good if you are doing something small. However, XML is better in the long run - and you can use XML in other products as well.. For example, Java, Oracle, Visual basic they all have special functions to handle XML very easily..

So, depending on what you have to do and how long you will be involved in it - you can decide what you should use/learn. I go for XML anyday...

FileMAker Pro in its present incarnation can return data from a CDML query in XML to be foprmatted for viewing by XSL OR XSLT.

That is to say, FileMaker Pro speaks XML; it listens to CDML or LDML or some other specific types of queries.
