October 31, 200718 yr Hello, I have a summary field with a running total, my database has 3500 plus entries and is growing....is there a better way to have a running count that will show the results faster. Right now the summary (running total) works but lags way behind the data input! Thanks, Tom
October 31, 200718 yr It's time to break out of the spreadsheet metaphor, and realize that summaries is something you do occationally by firering a script wich take you to a new layout. You will discover that as soon as you get rid of the summary field on the layout that bothers, does it render just as swift as the others without summary fields shown. I'll bet that you won't stare uninterrupted on the summyfields what ever you do! Who will it hurt you distinguises between nice to knows and the need to knows, and think a little about the workflow ... like whipping eggs for an omelet, there is a process or flow from getting the egg out of the shell until it lands on the dish ready for serving. Why has such a metaphoric flow fallen in disgrace?? You need to focus on where the data needs to when and why, if it's a ledger is it only a relation to the previous posting in the present account, if that's what you're after: http://www.databasepros.com/FMPro?-DB=resources.fp5&-lay=cgi&-format=list.html&-FIND=+&resource_id=DBPros000333 But remember with ledgers, they should be made in ink preventing you cook the books, as soon as you write something is it done, and only counter postings can remedy an error, exactly this principle works with the above mentioned template, if you delete an earlier record will nothing happen to your the last balance, even though the summary actually gives a new figure ... so the records should accidentally be deleted at all. However if you think you can survive the occational pressing off a button to get the figures you're after and not quite need to have neatly arranged printouts could you fill a global field with the subsummary if needed: http://www.kevinfrank.com/download/kf-fast-summary.zip --sd
