dot mac & FM 8.5. Can I run a server off a dot mac account?

Featured Replies

Hello

This may sound like a silly question, but does anyone know if I can run an FM server off a dot mac account? Has anyone tried?

No because you would need the filemaker server software on the actual server. Dot Mac doesn't have filemaker server installed so it won't work.

That would be quite a nice trick, if you could get Apple to run Filemaker Server software for you on their computers.

Obviously can place Filemaker databases themselves on a .Mac account. This is convenient because its accessible anywhere and the WebDav communication with .Mac is encrypted. However, you'll run into problems if more than one person tries to simultaneously access the database with a 'File not available' error.

You can access your own Filemaker server machine over the internet if you know the IP address - and it may be faster than .Mac. Its easiest if the machine is not behind a firewall, or if the FM server port is open. Even if your server is behind a firewall it may be accessible if the network administrators have set up a VPN or SSH server.

Open and forward Port 5003 to the ANT address of the Server. No VPN needed.
