Gaaah.... I got myself into a tizzy over what I now know as the "sticky text" issue in popups vs drop down lists. See:

The thing is, I really prefer the UI (keyboard wise) of the drop down. Is there any hope to getting sticky text with drop down behavior?

i think the answer is no.

Hope i'm proved wrong but i doubt it, sorry.

You could have another field auto enter the ID and combine it with a script that activates after a change using a performscript plugin to test the uniques and validity of the entry.

Or if invalid you could make it auto enter in red or return an error in the entry field.

or of course use validation to test the validity via must be a member of a value list.

just some thoughts.
