calculating a fraction of a year to the hour

Featured Replies

Hello,

is this possible?

( :) yes I'm hoping to appeal this your professional ambition by asking like that)

I would like to enter a given date and time, and have a fraction of a year calculated from then.

I.e. I enter Nov 21 12.15am, and a calculation tells me exactly which date and time is a third of a year (well, 0.333333 years) later.

My guess is I'll have to go via a third of the 525,600 minutes that a year has. I've just never done date calculations.

Cheers!

Not every year has 525,600 minutes. This year (2008), for example, is a leap year. Filemaker calculates time in seconds, and "a third of a year" cannot be translated into seconds - at least not "exactly".

"... and a calculation tells me exactly which date and time is a third of a year (well, 0.333333 years) later."

It's much easier, both technically and logically, to specify a whole number of days, weeks or years (but not months because month length varies).

Warrantees are usually specified as "90 days" or "3 years" for this reason.

I don't know what it is that requires the calculation of a third of a year, but it is easier to specify something like 121 days or 17 weeks or something that won't change with leap years or the vagaries of month length.
