Tagging records?

Disclaimer: I am a Filemaker n00b.

I have a fairly simple project that could well be done in a spreadsheet, but with one complex twist. My project entails a notes database, the records organized by tags. For those using OS X, think of something like Yojimbo or Yep. All I have is a description field, a comments field, and date created/modified fields. I would like to set up another field for tags which is related to a tags table. A tag cloud and autocomplete would be brilliant as well.

I have been looking around the web for resources but I am not familiar enough with the Filemaker terminology. "Tags" and "tagging" don't seem to be it. What sort of function should I be looking for? Thanks for any hints.

I would stab a guess at 'relationships' or am I completely off the mark?

Phil

Isn't a tag the same thing as a value list?

But, you want the ability to select more than one tag, right?

If your subject is coffee you might have tags for the different regions where the coffee is grown and the type of roast and how full bodied it is. If I understand tags right, you're going to want to be able to select from all of those and be able to choose more than just one. Is that right?

That is a pretty good example Christopher. What I am actually doing is putting historical data (references from books) from WWII into my database and would like to tag them by location, unit, or equipment. Rather than having a super-complex record that captures all possible types of information, I thought I would make it fairly simple and base it off of tags. I will check into value lists.
