Sub-summary doesn't appear in Preview mode?

Hello. I'm using FM 8.5 on Windows. I've inserted a leading sub-summary in a report and I can see it in Browse mode but it doesn't appear in Preview mode. Also, the page breaks don't work. Why is that?

Details: I have an Artists table and Artwork table. An artist can have multiple artworks. I want to print a catalog that shows all the artwork for each artist, and do a page break between each artist.

I've tried both leading and trailing sub-summaries (on the Artist ID field) but neither one shows the Artist fields that I place in the section, and the page breaks don't work.

I've tried layouts where the Artist is the main table and also where Artwork is the main table, and neither one works.

Thanks

Hi David,

Your report must be performed from the Artwork table. Let Report Assistant create the report for you. Select layout type Layouts > Columnar List, report with grouped data. Specify your fields then next. Organize by ArtistID, sort by ArtistID. Note: If you do not sort by the same field as you specified in ORGANIZE BY, then it won't work. Let FM create the report and write the script. Then FM will sort properly for you.

If it still doesn't work after proper sort, let us know. Remember to base the 'Categorize by' on the ARtistID from ARTWORK and not Artists. You can place the artist name within the leading part. On this part, to get the page break to work, specify 'page break before'.

That is a very annoying disjunction of functionality.

Huh? How can a part categorize if it isn't sorted by the category break field? It's totally logical. I agree that it isn't obvious as we'd like it though ... :smile2:

"Never mind, I forgot that one has to sort the records by the subsummary field in order for it to work. That is a very annoying disjunction of functionality."

It is a "feature" that can be taken advantage of: multiple sub-summary parts on one layout controlled by the record sort order.
