Editing related records in read-only layout

Featured Replies

This regards Filemaker Pro 8.5 Advanced. I have a database with two tables. One is a big list of people, the other a list of notes. For sake of description, the people are sales leads and the notes are notes on those leads. There may be zero or more notes per name. There's a unique ID field for the relationship. No problem with basic setup, works fine.

The layout in question has details of a person, along with a portal to the notes. This is the primary layout of interest, where the salespeople can add and edit notes related to that person. I want users to be able to add/edit notes on this screen, but not edit the person info.

So I've set the permissions of the privilege set to view the people table, and edit/create the notes table.

When I log in as one of these users in FMPro Client, everything works as expected. I can add/modify notes, and cannot edit other info. Wonderful.

When I log in as the same user via IWP, I cannot add or modify notes on this same layout. When I click the portal field I get a brief refresh, like it was going to an editable window. But the result is still an uneditable field (and if I click again, I get the same refresh).

I've also tested this using a standard text field from the notes table instead of the portal (understanding I'd just get the first note). I get the same exact results (client works, IWP doesn't).

Is this expected behavior? Are there any recommended workarounds?

I'd be very appreciative of any assistance. Thank you!

I've resolved this myself. I had to set the people table to be editable, and set the field displays to be read-only. Strange, but it worked.
