March 29, 200817 yr I'd be inmensely grateful if you could explain a novice using FileMaker 6 in a FileMaker-ignorant country how to do this. I hace two fields, 'Material' and 'Type', the second depends on the choice made in the first one. In Field1 'Material' I have different choices to be taken from 'Value List Material': 'Bronze', 'Pottery' and so on. Field2 is 'Type'and depends on Material. I want that, depending on the choice I made from Value List1 in Field1 ('Material'), different Value Lists appear when filling Field2 ('Type of object'). That is, if I chose 'Bronze' in the first field, FileMaker should now call 'Value List of Bronze Objects' when trying to fill Field2 (sword, brooch, etc.); and that if I instead chose 'Pottery' in Field1, FileMaker shows another Value List in Field2, namely, 'Value List of Pottery objects' ('dish', 'bowl' and so on). Each value list for each Category has many entries, so I cannot just put them all together in a single huge Value List. What is the easiest method to do this? Oc course, this is very simplified. Field 1 Value List contains at least 15 choices for 'Material'; and each of 15 possible ValueLists for Field2 (according to the material) has at least 20 types. Edited March 29, 200817 yr by Guest
March 31, 200817 yr Thersites I think you want is a conditional value list. Make a relationship between your two fields stored the input for material. make a value list off this relationship. I have attached a file to explain this better. Lionel MATERIALVALUELIST.zip
March 31, 200817 yr Author Lionel, Thank you very much. This is exactly what I needed, and your sample file explains it all! It says 'apprentice' close to your nick, but I bow to your knowledge! ONE LAST DOUBT: When filling the field 'type' in the input.fp5 file, the pop-up list displays a list that combines 'material' and 'type' (for example, your "B SA-106" or "A SA-106". However, when I chose one option, the final results only keeps the relevant info, that is, the 'type' (A, B, and so on). How do you manage to make the second part of the field in the list 'disappear' so to say? Thanks again. Edited March 31, 200817 yr by Guest
March 31, 200817 yr thersites Below the "Only related Values" line on the right hand side is a check box that says "Also display values from", check that box and then chose a second field that you want to displayed but only the first field information will be entered. March 31, 200817 yr Author Great! As I thought, I am as thick as two short planks as the Brits used to say! Thanks again from Spain!
