Re-finding an embedded container file & swapping it as a reference

After having been shown how to automatically embed referenced pix, I thought I would try and do the reverse; reconnect embedded pix to source and save as a reference. Quickly, I have realised that it involves searching the HD and therefore may need an applescript (I could not find a FM script function that searches the HD). Does anyone have any ideas how it could be done (on the proviso that there is only one copy of the file being searched)?

Wouldn't it be easier to export them, and link to the exported?

Yes it would be except that often, the picture is in a folder that has associated files.So the idea is not just to export the images but to find the original files and the associated files in each folder.
