Hello.

The database I am currently working on consists of several tables, and some of them are not connected.

(E.g. there is a table LOCATIONS and a table STAFF.)

My aim is to have one single layout where a user can enter his search terms.

(E.g. there would be a search field for location, for First Name, for Last name.)

On top, there would be a search field where you can search all the desired fields at once.

As long as I have tables that are related to each other I can place the according fields on the layout and everything works fine; I created fields that search in several fields at the same time and so on. But as mentioned: Here I have got some tables are not related to each other.

Also, is there a possibilty to show all the results from all the tables on one layout?

Thank you!

Ah your searching for the "Google" or "Spotlight" style search results?

There are methods where you can script a search in all tables on all fields the get a result set back (parent id) then present this on a "dashboard" or "search results" layout.

here are some pointers...

Hey Stephen,

Yes, a Google type search on different (not related) tables is more or less what I am looking for.

I have watched the mentioned videos, must admit though, that some of them (the interesting ones!) I had to leave in the middle of the show, as they are a little too advanced for my level. So, looks like I'll have to do some homework first! :

Thank you for your input!

Hi Ben, and Welcome to the Forum.

I have been a member of ISO FileMaker Magazine for a long time. IMO, it is a bargain at 24.95 (USD) a quarter, for what I get in return.

Um, yes, I've subscribed today, but the videos didn't solve my problem... But I'm sure to get to know some interesting bits & pieces (have already)

Hey Stephen,

Thank you for the file and your advice. I'll play with it for a little while and will get back.
