David Jondreau Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 This is my first real experience administering a db with Server. I'm working with Server 9 on a Mac Mini. I understand I should not edit the db "schema" while the db is being served. Does "schema" cover anything else besides field definitions and the relationship graph (ie everything under Manage Database....)? What about the other "Manage..." like Scripts, Custom Menus, Custom Functions, Value Lists, External Data Sources, Accounts & Privileges? Layouts? What is meant by the db "not being served"? Does that mean I simply need to close (pause?) the db via Server and then open it with my FM9A or do I need to shutdown Server itself? What procedure should I use to edit the schema? Thanks DJ
Steven H. Blackwell Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 The safest procedure would be to close the files and stop the FMS service/daemon. Then open the files with FileMaker Pro to do the work. Steven
mr_vodka Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 The ability to edit any of the schema which include most of the items that you stated is there but if users are actively using it while you are developing in it, it has a possbility to create corruption. The best bet will be to stop the files from being served and make the changes to a backed up copy of the files with Pro Advanced. Then when done, you can put the modified file back in the serving directory and reserve the files. You dont need to necessarily stop the serving process itself but I guess it wouldnt hurt.
David Jondreau Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 1) Thanks. 2) How do I stop the FMS daemon? Obv just quitting the console doesn't do it. 3) I should remove the files from the directory? Out of curiosity, what does that accomplish? 4) Thanks.
Steven H. Blackwell Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 You can close the files from within the Admin Console. You can also stop the service/daemon from within the Console. You can then work on the files directly in their diretory on the server. Steven
mr_vodka Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 I should remove the files from the directory? Out of curiosity, what does that accomplish? You dont have to remove the files at all from the serving directory. It just came across that way in the post since I was talking about working on backups. Personally, I work on backup copies and then after all the changes that I make I just copy it over to the serving directory. Of course there is still a clean backup just in case. :
