Drop-down list from 2nd field, not modifiable

Hey,

I put a drop-down value list on my layout, showing only the values of the second field. (The first field with its ugly the serial number I want to hide.)

Unfortunately, in the actual field where the chosen value is I have the first value only, the description only shows up in the list. Does anybody know how to make the second value appear in the field?

Furthermore: Is there a good way to have a drop-down list and avoid at the same time that the user can enter own values?

Thanks,

: Mike

The behavior that you're seeing is correct. A value list based on ID-Text, but only showing Text will actually store the ID in the field. If formatted as a drop-down list, you will see the ID after entry. The user can only add to the drop down list by adding a record in the table upon which the list is based.

If you change to a popup menu, you'll "hide" the ID and see the Text. However, with a long list, popup menus are cumbersome.

You might have graduated to the requirement for a new interface. With many choices, you may decide to put a button "Select" next to your field, and pop a window of selections in list view. This window can have an Add New button, if a new value is required. You can add a Find button to this popup, as well. This is a good article to review: Scott Love's Popup List Article

Hey bcooney!

Thank you for your detailed explanation – your explanation is highly appreciated!

You might have graduated to the requirement for a new interface.

After having read dozens of threads and what you mention: Yes, you are right, it is time for an interface change. I’ve tried buttons and things, but it looks like what I aim for works with a filtered portal fairly well, actually better than with the value list.

(This, however, brings up another question, but this should be mentioned in another thread .)

Thanks you also for the link to the article. Looks like a fairly interesting magazine.
