laural Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I am a long-time developer and I am experiencing a problem I have never run across before (two actually, but my other problem will have to be posted somewhere else). For this problem, I have a company database with a company id, I have a portal in the company database that uses the relation idCompany to idCompany (in the content database). So if a piece of content has the company id, it shows in the portal - perfect. If the content has a list of company ids, each separated by a carriage return, it *still* shows up in the portal (which is still great) - but that doesn't make send, because it is no longer equal. Now I have some records, just randomly, that also have a list of company ids in the content records, that don't show in the portal - as expected... any thoughts on this craziness? Thanks
bcooney Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 FM6, really? You are describing a primary key to multikey relationship. If the primary key is any one of the values in the multikey, then the relationship is valid. Not craziness.
Søren Dyhr Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 May I suggest you look at the files here: http://www.kevinfrank.com/demo-files-earlier.html ...and in particular the Dwindling one. --sd
laural Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 lol - no, not fm6 - I haven't updated my profile (or apparently been to the forum in a looong time) - anyway, I did not realize that matching an id in one table to many ids in another table would be valid - what threw me off was that the data entry was not consistent, that is why some were "connecting" and others weren't - the data person had entered some values in a list with carriage returns (valid) - and others with a space between each id (invalid) - thanks for the reply :
Lee Smith Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Hi laural lol - no, not fm6 - I haven't updated my profile .... Then why not do it now. all you have to do is to Go to the [color:blue]Menu Bar >> [color:blue]MY PROFILE >> [color:blue]Your Control Panel >> [color:red]FileMaker Questions it will take you less time to do that, then it took me to post these instructions. One of the benefit in changing it now, is that we will know which version we are addressing, and can suggest the appropriate approach to to match your version. Another benefit is, that you don't need to enter your version each time you ask a new question. Thanks for your cooperation, Lee
