I like to get a random string alpha-numeric

that is not use in the db yet!

If this field will be a key, then create a text field with auto-enter serial. You can put a text prefix.

BUT, you're better off with a number field set to auto-enter serial. It'll sort more predictably.

yes serial would be easy but a random alpha-numeric string will work better!
