Saving Copies as "Compacted FIle"

Once again I don't know where to put this question.

It's somewhat related to getting data out of filemaker.

My question is: [color:red]What happens to a file when you save a copy as

"compacted copy (smaller)" ?

The most noticeable thing is size.

The one I saved like this was about 75% the size of the original.

Does this do anything for optimizing performance?
