First, forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong place, I'm new here. :

I'm trying to create a search layout that has a few different text boxes that each search different fields in a table. Ideally, I want to be able to write a script that finds the record/records that best match the search criteria and then reports them into a portal.

The program is still very new to me and I'm struggling with the interface and syntax. If my question is too stupid or the answer too complicated, then I'd ask you direct me to a comprehensive tutorial.

Your choice of Topic Area was fine since you asked about a Find Layout. :

In addition to what Barbara has suggested, you should read the manuals that came with your application. For instance, the User Guide for 8.5 has several pages on how to find records beginning on page 23. In other words, you will find a lot of the answers to your questions in the User Guide, and the Online Help (that is available to you when FileMaker is opened).
