I'm in the market for a new laptop & most are now pre-instaled with Windows XP home edition. The FM website says that they are not testing anything but FM Pro 5.5 with XP and that all other versions use XP at their own risk. I use FM Pro 5 & don't really want to spend another $249 US just to upgrade to 5.5. Has anyone found any problems using FM Pro 5 with Windows XP???

First, the upgrade price is not $249; I believe it's $99, but double check that.

Second, there have been reports of issues with Windows XP and FileMaker Pro 5.

Third, if you're planning on connecting to any servers, I'd use XP Professional Edition, not XP Home edition.

I prefer that the company not waste resources better devoted to other items by trying to test every back version of the product every time a new version of an OS is relesed, either by Microsoft, by Apple, or by Red Hat.

I am the most complaining person here, but I do not see any usefulness in this.

You invested in new NW with HOME operating system. If you didn't research all aspects of your upgrade, you cannot blame FMI.

Also FM should run, but don't expect miracles in Windows SW jungle. 6 months ago I was still running Windows NT4, because not all things I was using were W2000 ready, and W2000 didn't worked well before SP2.

First I agree with above posts.

Second I have used Fm5.0 on XPHome and had no problems...at least that I knew of. Depends on what or how complex your solution is.

Have since piped all machines to 5.5.

Resources are better used going forward getting our LONG list of wants and needs satisfied while giving "reasonable" backwards support. While 5.5 isn't a major step forward there are too many things I like to want to go back.

I have been using FMP 5 and my FMP 5 run time solutions on both Win XP Home and Professional in single user for about six weeks. Have yet to encounter any problems in either OS with v 5. I have only worked in single user. Can't comment on network environments.

Hope this provides some peace of mind.

I've been running FM 5 and FM 5 Developer on my XP system for 3 months without incident. As usual, FileMaker would love to stiff you for a marginal upgrade (5.5), by withholding basic information. They seem to love to bite the hand that feeds them.

What "basic information" has FMI withheld? The original question had to do with running Version 5 on Windows XP.

FMP 5 is not certified or tested to run on either flavor of Windows XP.

Some reports have surfaced of problems; others, such as you, have reported no incidents.

Windows XP Home is not an OS for use in multi-user environments for the most part. That is the environment where most FIleMAker Pro work is done; and it is the environment from which I responded to the original question.

If FileMaker Pro is "biting the hand" that feeds the company, why have over 2 million copies of the product been sold since the introduction of FileMaker Pro 5.
