Hello,

I am creating my first Filemaker Database using Filemaker 8 and am having trouble getting the result I want for a index-style linking system for contact records. I have figured out the 'half way there solution' but was hoping someone could help me realize the full vision.

I have a table and layout called Contacts. I also have a table and layout called See Also. In the See Also table there are four fields: Source Name, Source Description, Target Name, & Target Description. There is a portal to the See Also table on the Contacts layout. The overall goal is to display the Target Name and Description as a link in the See Also portal on the Source's record and display the Source Name and Source Description in the See Also portal on the Target's record.

For example:

John Smith, Husband (on Jane's record)

Jane Smith, Wife (on John's record)

The Source Name is linked to the Name field on the Contacts table and the Target Name is linked to the Name field on a second table occurrence of the Contacts table.

My solution will work fine for the Source contact. The appropriate info is displayed in the See Also portal and I have it set up as a link to the Target contact. However, I can get no info at all to appear in the Target's See Also portal on their record.

If I switch who the Target and Source are, it will work the other way around. It seems to be something to do with the second Contact Table occurrence but I can't seem to see what.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading this far!

Thanks so much! I figured this topic must have been discussed already but couldn't find it in the forum the way I was searching. I appreciate the pointer. Have a swell day.
