Is there a script that I can use to send a bcc email?

If anyone could it it would be appreciated...

I'm using the email campaign file that is a standard file under people and assets when you create a new filemaker file. I put a large amount of contacts in my customer database but I want to be able to send one email message using a blind carbon copy (bbc). The way it works now is if I send to all my contacts it creates a separate email for each and every one of them. Is there a script that I can create to send a single email doing a blind carbon copy (bbc) with all my contacts either individually or from a group? If so, what would it be?

Thank you.

The script step is send mail. You should see a field there for BCC. I checked in both FM9 and FM10 Advanced.

I would note, however, that sending emails with lots of recipients from a personal email address is a good way to get spam-blocked even if you are not spamming. This note comes from experience. I would recommend a service like Constant Contact, or stick to looping through your records one-by-one and sending individual emails.

Good Luck!

I also believe there is a bug in the direct SMTP sending script (in FMS10) regarding the BCC field. I think the problem is that they get sent as CCs instead.

Thank you for your quick response. And also thank you for the suggestion to use constant contact.

I would much rather send emails to my customers so they knew they were from me and not spam( where I do understand that could happen if I use the bcc). I did have a group of 400 customer that I tried to send to and of course it stalled out my computer trying to bring 400 hundred emails up where I would have had to click send 400 hundred times.

By chance is there a script i could create to automatically send out those 400 emails without me having to hit send from my email program 400 hundred times?

I could see this possibly requiring some sort of outside script or plugin perhaps to send automatically though since it leaves filemaker and opens my mail program.

Thank you again.

The Send Mail step can be used with or without dialog - without will send the e-mail immediately.

This depends a lot on the email client you are using.

For example, Entourage just puts the email in your drafts folder.

The last time I used Outlook (2003?) it would show a security dialog (something to the extent of an outside program is trying to send mail, is this ok) if you told FileMaker to send it without dialog. Otherwise, it would bring up the email and require you to press send.

In summary, email clients can be a pain with the send mail step. If its feasible for your company, use of FileMaker Server 10 now gives you the ability to send mail via SMTP which eliminates all these problems.

In the short term, there are options for how to send mail without getting a dialog from FileMaker or your email client.

What email client and version are you using?

I am using Apples built in mail program.

I did do some experimentation and I sent one email right from the file menu where it says "send mail" it went perfectly. filemaker sent the file to the mail program and the mail program sent right away. I was wondering if it could be an error in the script using the "looping" script perhaps. I'm not too familiar with it though. I am fairly new at this.
