May 22, 200124 yr Newbies We have FM% server up on a Win2K server machine. My question is this - the manual and docs state that all files to be served are supposed to be either in the server directory, or one folder level deep. Is this indeed the case, or is there a known work-around some one might be able to help me out with? James Huie

June 2, 200124 yr What specifically is your concern in having your database files in a folder within the FMServer folder?
June 2, 200124 yr It may not "look" like an elegant file structure, but there are some distinct advantages in doing it this way: Backups are quick, clean and easy - without taking the server off-line. FMS and all of the files open automatically on a re-boot. We have several FM servers running on NT4.0 (along with several FM servers on MAC OS 9) that went through the earthquake up here in Olympia back in February. Through 5 days of power outages, dying UPS and fits and starts with generator power and they just kept going with no data loss - and the file backups and tape backups kept working also. One FM server even had it's monitor thrown across the room which ripped half of the video card out of the back and it kept on running. BTW, a couple of our MAC FM servers didn't come back up and had to be manually re-started after we were back on commercial power.

To move to Fm5 server, we have a HUGE migration chore ahead of us, if all the in-use FM3 databases not only have to be converted, but then also have to be moved to the FM5 server directory to be hosted as well. James Huie In average case it took 1-2 hours to do that.

We tried shortcuts/aliases, it the server didnt seemt o be able to read them. I didnt try folder aliases though, maybe that would work... James Huie
