Does anyone know where I can find an example to create financial comparisons from "raw" data?

Data in my financial table includes:

Date

Amount

Type (income or expense)

Category (advertising, consulting, medical, show fees, etc)

Vendor

Animal Name

Pay Type (cash, credit card, etc)

Year (calc on Date)

Month (calc on date)

Sum (total of amount)

I want to be able to run dynamic comparison reports, including:

Category year to year

Category month to month

Income vs Expense by years, months)

Animal costs by years, months

etc..

Not sure what I need as far as calc and summary fields and/or relationships to accomplish this. Would appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction to get started.
