Victoria Bitter Posted February 21, 2002 Posted February 21, 2002 Does anyone know how to include subdirectories in the Open File Option when opening files hosted by the server? eg. we have about 100 files, so instead of them being in a long list of individiual files, they can be in folders, or subfolders??? ANY IDEAS PEOPLE??? WE're DESPERATE!
Vaughan Posted February 21, 2002 Posted February 21, 2002 Why not hide those files users need not open -- the join files etc. Only display the "main" databases. To hide databases, in FMP 5.x choose the "multi-user (hidden) sharing option. For FMP 4 append an underscore character to the file name (not the extension).
Fitch Posted February 21, 2002 Posted February 21, 2002 How about making a database with scripts/buttons for opening the hosted files? Group the buttons together in a pleasing and logical way (sounds redundant) and give everyone a copy of the file to enjoy.
spragueg Posted February 22, 2002 Posted February 22, 2002 Better yet hide all the files and create a "Main Menu" File that links to each solution. Then give all the users an applescript that opens the "Main Menu". Then if you need to edit the main menu you can without having to update each users computer.
Victoria Bitter Posted February 25, 2002 Author Posted February 25, 2002 Thanks everyone.. Unfortunately I didnt click the Windows icon. I find it interesting that folder hierarchies aren't supported by filemaker server... over $1,000 later. We can't put all our databases into one filemaker pro file because of the people who work here. Good idea though. If anyone can HELP uS still.. I would love to know how to do it. Thanks.
Vaughan Posted February 25, 2002 Posted February 25, 2002 None of my users ever open database solutions by looking at the server because I give each user an "opener" file. The opener file lives on their desktop; when it's double-clicked it automatically opens the main file of the database solution, then closes itself. Often users don't even know the database is on a server, they think it's local. I posted a FQ on making opener files some time ago. Do a Forum search on "opener". Not hard at all. It'll solve your problems.

Victoria Bitter Posted February 26, 2002 Author Posted February 26, 2002 Thanks very much everyone... I tried the button/script idea and that was great. I will try the Opener one too Prob is that not everyone in the office has same level of computer literacy/commonsense SO.. I will trial some solutions and let you know what worked best in the office Thanks again
Newbies bubu Posted February 26, 2002 Newbies Posted February 26, 2002 The opener is the best! People are just doubleclicking on it and everything is automatic!
ccosner Posted February 27, 2002 Posted February 27, 2002 I use an opener file as well to deal with this problem. A tabbed navigation layout gets users to the subsets of databases they need. In the file there are also several scripts I refer to as "suites." If I can pigeonhole a user regarding the files they generally like to start with, the opener also automatically opens the appropriate suite of databases when they access the file and puts the layout with their subset of databases forward in the opener. Saves them a lot of hunting for files. 'Power' users still like to use the hosts button. On PCs, at least, if you click in the upper area of the hosts window and start to type the name of a database, it takes you right to it in the list. Then just tap enter to select.
