Newbies MattEpstein Posted December 24, 2009 Newbies Posted December 24, 2009 I am going out of town with my laptop computer that I have file maker pro on, and I wanted my assistant to update my data base while I am gone. Is it possible to do the database on an excel spread sheet and then import that completed data to my database when I return? I do not have my file maker books any longer and am not sure of the fields that file maker will require to successfully transfer all the info...Please help... Matt :
comment Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 Is it possible to do the database on an excel spread sheet and then import that completed data to my database when I return? It depends: if it's just a flat table, then yes. If it's a relational database, then probably not. Since you have the Advanced version, why not generate a runtime and let the assistant work on that?
Newbies MattEpstein Posted December 24, 2009 Author Newbies Posted December 24, 2009 If the system is in runtime, can I access the database from where I am and not mess up what he is working on?
comment Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 I am not sure what you mean by "access the database from where I am". A runtime is a stand-alone - your assistant can use it to modify a COPY of your file/s. If you won't be modifying yours at the same time, you can either import the modified data, or just adopt the copy as yours.
IdealData Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 If you both need access at the same time consider hosting your database through an FM internet hosting company. If your DB is fairly simple then you may just get away with Instant Web Publishing for your assistant. If your needs are short term then download the 30 day trial of FMP to provide full FM access to the hosted file.
