Help with conditional value list

I am trying to restrict a value list as follows:

two fields - one named "Subject" the second named "Category". There are multiple subjects for each category. I have the database setup so that when I enter the Subject field in Find mode, it drops down to show all the subjects. Then based on the subject chosen it shows a restricted list of categories to choose from. When the Find proceeds it goes to the full record that has that Subject and Category.

--My problems is that I don't want to show all the Subjects in the dropdown - I want to restrict the dropdown list in Subject to only those Subjects in the current Found Set. So far nothing I do to the way the Value List is set up or the relationships will restrict the subject dropdown. Can anyone help with this? - Thanks.

Value lists are not restricted by found sets. Conditional value lists do not work in Find mode. (you could script the find by having the user enter criteria into global fields).

It's not clear what you're asking, and what mode you're in. There is no current found set if you're in Find mode.

Well that clears some things up. I wasn't aware that the Find mode ignores the Found set or that conditional value lists couldn't be constrained. I realize that I could use a layout to find multiple subjects (in an OR search mirroring what I already do with scripting and selecting checkboxes) but was hoping to avoid that as the dropdown with value list approach would have been cleaner. Makes me wish I could just write a few SQL statements to do what I need to .. oh well. Thanks for your prompt reply and clearing this up for me. - just to clarify - I was using a display layout for dual duty - allowing someone (through a button press) to enter find mode and then use drop downs in the Subject and Category to go directly to a different record. I didn't want them to enter the field in Browse mode since then they would change the value of the field and that needs to remain inviolate. It actually works ok, just that the Subject drops down and shows all the possible Subjects instead of those in the Found set, which, as you pointed it out, is how it is going to work. Now that you have pointed out that pursuing this further is a dead-end, I will change tacks and script an alternate search method. Again, Thank you for your timely help.
