Sequentially Numbering Sub-summaries

Is there a technique to sequentially number subsummary breaks? For example, printing a subsummary report by person and then activity. Person is the break, activities in the body.

I'd like each subsummary break to be sequentially numbered. All I can think of is looping thru the records and setting a field in each activity record (first person's recs get 1, next person's recs get 2, etc), then showing that field in the subsummary part.
