Newbies pcarrington Posted November 18, 2001 Newbies Posted November 18, 2001 I will have to change my name to "The UnLearned." Have used FM programs I developed (not too complicated) on Macs for years. Will now need to convert to use on PC-Windows. Used FM Developer and followed all the cook-book rules (was TOO easy obviously). When I then take the files on a zip and try to open them on a PC...the PC asks for a program to open them and nothing works. I must be missing a vital but obvious step. Please assist...thank you. LiveOak Posted November 18, 2001 Posted November 18, 2001 There is really nothing to convert. Just copy the files to the PC and open them with a PC version of FM. The first time you do this you many need to use the File Menu --> Open dialog in FM. I'm guessing that your are using Developer to rename the files? Or, are you using FM Runtime? What version of FM? -bd

What I'm trying to do is to make Stand-Alone Runtime versions so that the receiving PC doesn't need a PC version of FM. Am I confused; but I thought that I could do that w/ my programs for non-FM owners; e.g., as though I was going to shareware or freeware my programs. More advice is needed...and thanks, again. DrC
Ocean West Posted November 19, 2001 Posted November 19, 2001 You will need to copy the FileMaker Files to a PC running the FileMaker Developer Tool. Once on the PC you "bind" the solution the same as on the Mac. Althought the "solution" is cross platform the application or the run-time app is not, therefore requires the platform specific "binder".

So let me paraphrase my understanding here... I can make runtime solutions all day long for Macs, as I use a Mac for this. And distribute them to other Mac users according to the rules. BUT for PC runtime solutions, I need a PC to install FM Developer into, then use the FM Developer in the PC to bind per usual, then I can distribute these to PC users as runtime solutions. Is that corrrect? And thanks again. Whew! It must be the coffee. DrC
Ocean West Posted November 20, 2001 Posted November 20, 2001 You are correct sir! You could also use Virtual PC. I believe the CD is a Hybird... I also recommend you get some sort of Installer/ say Installer Vice because the pc has some weird issues when you put all your files on a CD it will lock all the FM files. The end user will have to fuss with getting the permissions un locked. Plus it makes your presentation much smoother you can create a CD installer or a Downloadable installer... SD.

Thank you, Stephen. Will get going w/ this immediately. Your advice is appreciated and timely. DrC
