I have a layout that defines a piece of equipment. I locked the fields that contain the S/N, date acquired, size, etc. so that the casual user could not accidentally change them.

But now I have to allow for the addition of new equipment. I have created a different layout that only contains those locked out fields. Is there a scripted way to unlock the fields, then lock them again once the new equipment is entered?

There are two approaches to your problem.

1) Lock all the fields on a layout according to a Global Variable. In the Security Priveleges you can make access to the record via a layout dependent on a condition. Note, you cannot individually define that "only this or that field" is locked or not. Either all on the layout or nothing.
