ldoodle Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Hiya, We use peer to peer sharing between FMP11/Win7 PCs. The actual files are stored on a server share for backup purposes. The 'main' PC opens the files directly from this share with sharing turned on. Other clients open using the Remote option. The causes the warning about sharing from remote locations (server shares) may cause performance issues. Is there anyway to stop this warning? Alternatively if there is a way to acheive the following using Server that would be great: 1) Ability to copy the files from the share to a laptop for offline use 2) When the laptop is brought back in, ability to copy back to the share overwriting the files With previous versions of Server this wasn't possible as when open on the server they are locked for overwriting outside of FM. As we visit places where internet connectivity is a no-go, true offline use is the only way to show customers our products. Thanks!
ldoodle Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Oh I forgot to add that the ability of closing down Server before copying from laptop to share is not possible, as the users don't have the expertise to do this, and I wouldn't want to give them RDP access to the server anyway!
Vaughan Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 The database should NOT be on a network file share. That is what the alert is specifically warning against. The practice results in poor performance and is a also cause of file corruption: every time the network burps the database can get an error in it. It's a lose-lose situation. The solution is simply to have the database on the local hard disk of the computer that is the host. regarding the second issue, the whole "taking a copy of the database home" thing is a nightmare. Synchronisation is not easy. RDP is actually the BEST solution for remote access. However if the business requires remote access to databases, it's time to get FileMaker Server and a dedicated host computer and set it up correctly.
bcooney Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 If they are taking a copy for read-only use bcs there's no Internet connection, then you don't really have a synchronization requirement. You could just copy off a recent backup. The go to answer for "real" synchronization is WorldSync.
