mbrightaus Posted April 19, 2002 Posted April 19, 2002 This is very annoying as some of my layouts are very detailed and complex. Why is it that when I recover - some of the layouts get screwed up and no longer function. What is going on. My system is quite large with 27 databases and sometimes FileMaker requires me to do a recovery as the file has become damaged for some unknown reason. Is there something I am missing here - after recovery the pop up window says everything is OK. The Data maybe but the layouts are suspect. Hope someone can through some light on this one for me. Thanks Michael.
SteveB Posted April 19, 2002 Posted April 19, 2002 NEVER use a file that has been recovered for anything more than extracting the data. You cannot guarantee its integrity. In fact you are much better off backing up frequently and using the backup then messing with the recover command.
mbrightaus Posted April 19, 2002 Author Posted April 19, 2002 OIC - This must be an undocumented feature - So what is File Maker doing about this. Thanks for the advice - I do backup on a regular basis . However - during the day everything seems to be working fine - its only when I have copied the files to another machine and starting it up again that you find the files are stuffed. This does not happen all the time though. Regards Michael
LiveOak Posted April 19, 2002 Posted April 19, 2002 I'm with Steve, there is no guarantee that Recover fixes all of the corruption. Sounds to me as if your layout has some latent corruption. I'd go back to your master structural backup (Which I KNOW you have) and import the data from your current files. Better yet, export the data to text files, then import it to as copy your structure files. Asking FMI to fix this is asking them to fix any sort of corruption your system can dish out. How would FMI fix a deleted file? I'd look the the integrity of the systems your are running FM on. We see excellent stability, but are VERY careful in our configuration and maintenance of the machine that run FM Server. -bd
mbrightaus Posted April 19, 2002 Author Posted April 19, 2002 The server I am using at the moment is a little under configured - However I don't think the users would be happy waiting around while I re-construct the databases all day. There must be a better way. Michael
