WallFilm Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Hi every time I move a db to a back up drive I need to create again all the references. At times this is very time consuming. Is there a way to keep the various DB so all layout and data will stay linked even in a different machine? Thanks a lot.
bruceR Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Not enough information. You refer to a single file - "move a db.." and there should be no file references in a single file. Maybe you mean multiple files? How many files and how do they reference each other? Do you know what file references are? If the files are all in the same folder then you only need the simple form: file:Contacts
WallFilm Posted June 10, 2010 Author Posted June 10, 2010 Thanks Bruce: probably however I didn't address the question properly: I have a folder for my students work it consists on the following DB: General (with the general infos about each students) this DB has several tables. WorkMails (where I receive the homework from the kids). This is connected to the General through through a relationship based on their email address. Pictures (where I have their visual work) linked to general through another relationship and so on. If I click on a Student record I get whichever info I need. Some however are stored in other DB and connected through different relationship which will appear in different Layout of this DB. Now: if I copy this folder as it is to another Hard drive I must reconnect the various layout as although the same group of DB with exactly the same name is in the copied folder in my General DB I find several layout telling me Table-Field Missing Is there a way to copy without loosing the original links between the various db? Thanks
Vaughan Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 All the databases should be in the same folder, and the file references should be: file:filename ... nothing else: no IP numbers or folder names or drive letters. The only time the reference should contain an IP number is if the files are hosted on a different FM Server, and even then this reference should be second: file:filename fmnet:/127.0.0.1/filename
bruceR Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 (edited) You mention relationships but you do not mention file references. I'll repeat the question: do you know what file references are, and do you know how to edit them? Vaughan and I have given the same answer. It all belongs in one folder, with simple file references. It isn't clear what you're moving: the entire system; or some subset of files. Edited June 11, 2010 by Guest
