What is the best way to create a related child record?

I realize this is filemaker 101 but I can't seem to find the best way to do this. I have 3 tables that are nested (parent, child, and grandchild). When I create a new parent record, and then wish to add child records to this, what is the best way? When I add new records, I want to be sure it is related to the proper parent ID. Is the portal the best way? If using a portal, I will also want to add new "child" records related to that portal entry (i.e. granchild records). Can someone advise on the best way to set this up? I've attached a simple database with 3 nested tables. I use parent and child as hierarchical meaning not as a family tree.
