I have fields that I need to fill with a specific color. I am trying to use the color picker from within FM11 to sample the color that I want from a background image. For some reason whatever I sample is coming out a few shades darker than it should.

This is really messing me up with my current project. Any suggestions?

I tried changing the color profiles but it did not impact the colors at all.

(this is not an issue where I am trying to sample from an image with noise or JPEG artifacts, I am trying to sample from a solid color that I have used many times)

I had this problem a few years back and I was able to correct the problem by deleting a beta FileMaker extension that was messing something up with the color picker. The problem I do not currently have any FileMaker Extensions installed.

Here is a screencast that illustrates the problem:

Try it in this order:

1. Sample the color;

2. Switch to "Generic RGB" profile;

3. Press OK.

I tried changing the color profiles but it did not impact the colors at all.

Here you can see the results for yourself:

I don't know. I thought I could reproduce the issue (in 10.5), but now I am not so sure. One thing I am reasonably sure of is that the triangle at the top-right corner of the swatch means the color is "profiled". Selecting "Generic RGB" removes the triangle so the color is device-independent.

Two more things you could try:

1. Use RGB sliders instead of HSB;

2. Calibrate you monitor and create a profile for it.

In any case, I believe this is an OS issue, not Filemaker (check what happens in other applications).

I found an older Mac in our office that is running Tiger OSX 10.5.8. Unfortunately it is only running FM6 so I cannot verify the behavior with new versions of FM. The color picker on it (with FM6) works fine with no color shifts, regardless of what profiles are selected. I tried to make it fail and nothing I did caused the color to shift.
