I am brand new at the sql server stuff. I think my hosting plan will let me use mysql. I would like to know how to connect to a sql server. It seems daunting to me. Is there training somewhere specifically how to do this?

Filemaker comes with a very detailed ODBC JDBC guide under the help menu. You will probably be using phpMyAdmin to manipulate your MySQL database and FM has a built in SQL query builder so you don't need to be a SQL expert. However, it also wouldn't hurt to learn a little about SQL queries. The MySQL website has lots of info.
