I am a new FM user and have been spending hours trying to figure out how to define a Drop Down field to show a list of data. I'm sure this question has been asked before. I've been referring to the FM Help as well as a FM for Dummies and FM 10 (the missing manual) even though I am using FM Pro 11.

When I try to create a new Value List from the Manage Value List dialog box, the choices are:

1. Use values from field.

2. Use value list from another file.

3. Use custom values.

I can't choose #1 because the data I want to populate my database field is not in this original file. It's in another one.

I can't choose #2 because when I do choose my second f7p file, the second selection "Value list" shows "". If it is asking to pick a Value list from another file, that is what I've been trying to do. Maybe my "list" has not been defined as a "Value List" but that's my goal.

I don't want to choose #3 because I have too many selections to manually type in and separate it with a carriage return.

Can anyone help me? I've been trying to do this - one of many things I am trying to do (sadly) for a couple of days and have not had any luck.

Thanks.

Hi fmrccob, and Welcome to the Forum,

As a matter of fact, today. :

Some questions for you.

Do you know how to create a relationship?

Are these Separate Files (i.e. File A and File B. ) or Separate Tables in the same file (i.e. Table A and Table B. )?

You have two good reference books. That is a giant step in the right direction.

Since this is an exercise, why not attach the file(s). If two files, copies into a folder and Zip it. If one File, just zip it.

To attach a file, this thread may help you Link

Open the second file. Define a value list using values from field xyz::abc. Close the file. Now define a value list in the first file, and set it to use the value list you have created in the second file.
