changing name of output file

Hello

Can someone tell me whether it is possible to change the name of an output file by setting the filename as a variable. I would like to have a date in the output file name.

I have tried setting a variable called $filename which has the value Getdate, and then using that as the filename in the filepath but it just calls the output file the name of the variable.

ie $filename

Any help greatly appreciated
