owaring Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Did I imagine it or can I manage security of a file via a separate file which contains just users? Both files to be hosted on the server. FMP11
bcooney Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Perhaps you're thinking of External Authentication?
owaring Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 External Authentication exactly...... can this be done via another fmp file? if so how?
Vaughan Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 External Authentication exactly...... can this be done via another fmp file? No. External Authentication requires FM Server and works with Active Directory (Win) or Open Directory (Mac). The advantage of using AD or OD is that the user groups and accounts can also be used to manage other IT resources such as computer log-ins, e-mail accounts and file share access. EA can also be used in a simpler setup without AD or OD by creating the user accounts and groups in the OS of the host computer running FM Server.

Thanks Vaughn, I have server so this will all be cool, not sure where I dreamt up using another fmp file, ah well! Thanks again
Steven H. Blackwell Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 There is a Tech Brief on the subject of External Server Authentication you might want to read. It contains a lot of information that explains how EA works and how to implement it. Steven
