Is there a calculation I can use that limits the amount of text that a user can type into a field - say 50 characters?

Are you still using v7 of FileMaker, or have you upgraded.

I did a search of the Forum using the Key words of +limit +characters +fields (using the pluses) and got 74 hits inculding this one which answers your question Limit characters in a field
