DLM Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Hi guys -- I've a large excel file that I need to import into a DB in FM 5.5, some of the excel data is in Hebrew and when I do the importing all Hebrew data is imported into FM as totally blank fields. How can I make the Hebrew characters import correctly? Best!
comment Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 That could be a problem. What version is the Excel file and on what platform was it created? And what is your platform (I am not sure you can run 5.5 on Snow Leopard)?
DLM Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 Hi, thanks for your answer: What version is the Excel file = When I select the file and choose "Get Info" it says "Micrisoft Excel 97-2004" and the Excel I've is Office 2008 version 12. What platform was it created under = I think PC (99% sure). My platform = OS 10.6.8 and FM 5.5v1
comment Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Hm... Well, frankly, I can't get version 6 to run smoothly under Leopard - so I'd expect 5.5 under SL to be pretty clunky... Anyway, before getting to the import: are you able to input Hebrew text into Filemaker at all?
Lee Smith Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 My platform = OS 10.6.8 and FM 5.5v1 I used v6 with Snow Leopard without incident. However, I recently upgraded to Lion and v6 no longer works under Lion! Lee
Lee Smith Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Hi, thanks for your answer: Do not double post your questions! I deleted your other thread. Lee

Hi comment -- Yes, 5.5 under SL is somewhat clunky at times but it does get the job done :-) No, I can't input Hebrew into my FM at all but I resolved this by doing a "Find & Replace" on Excel -from Hebrew to English- and then I do the importing to FM. Thanks much! I used v6 with Snow Leopard without incident. However, I recently upgraded to Lion and v6 no longer works under Lion! Lee Got it Lee! Thanks for the heads up!
Vaughan Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I can't input Hebrew into my FM at all but I resolved this by... Maybe your work-around isn't really working. I'm not sure whether FMP 5.5 can manage unicode. The solution is to upgrade.
comment Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 The solution is to upgrade. Or downgrade to MacOS 9 or earlier. I resolved this by doing a "Find & Replace" on Excel -from Hebrew to English Not sure what that means, but if it resolves your issue... IMHO, the greatest obstacle here is displaying the Hebrew characters. Version 5.5 does not support Unicode, so the characters would have to be upper ASCII - but then you would also need a compatible font, and I am not sure such font would be compatible with SL.
Vaughan Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 IMHO, the greatest obstacle here is displaying the Hebrew characters. Version 5.5 does not support Unicode... Ah, that was my point about the work-around not working... and hence needing to upgade.
