Can I run the Mac version of FM 5.5 and serve to Windows clients. Does this work or do I have to have a windows machine to serve to Windows?

No you don't need to serve Windows clients from a Windows server. Mac and Win clients and servers can all work together with FMP. You might need to give some consideration to layout problems, however. A solution run on a windows PC can look very different to the same solution on a mac. Depending on your FMP version, there are also some scripting considerations.

FM Pro is cross platform between Mac and PC.

As Rigsby said, platform related scripts (AppleScript on PC) could be a problem.

To serve from FM server running on "the other platform" is no problem.

You must just have the protocol running, that is all. TCP/IP is the best.
