Fastest way to copy data from a related field during import?

Featured Replies

What is the fastest way to populate a field that is copying data from a related record during an import?

Auto-enter? Replace field contents? Lookup? Export and import?

Thanks

Nina

Hi Nina,

The fastest way is NOT to copy data from a related record but rather to just copy the ID and then all related data is available through the relationship. If the related data must be planted in the table (for historic/audit purposes) then the second-best way would depend upon the purpose and relationship of the tables involved and how they are related.

Can you fill us in a bit more? :^)

The more I tried to not do this, the more I seemed to need it. It seems I need to keep pulling data into other tables because I need the fields as part of relationships.

I've been using Auto-enter. I recently read some posts on Auto-enter and replace field contents, but still need to think the logic of my database through a little more to make sure they should all have it unchecked.

As I said prior, it would depend upon the situation - what fields do you keep pulling into other relationships? IDs are fine and so is other data sometimes.

If you can give us an example maybe we can make suggestions as to the best (or at least a better) approach. As is, I cannot help at all because I have nothing to work with.

Please provide a specific detailed example and I would be most pleased to help you with it, Nina. :^)
