January 18, 200223 yr Newbies We have a user that has been using FM Pro for several years. recently, we needed to move this uyser to another building. We have network connectivity through a Cisco wireless access point, and a wireless bridge. Since the user is connected to a switch, and then into the wireless bridge, no changes were made to her network settings. Yet, whenever she attempts to access ANY files she receives an error message stating that the file is not multi-user or the host could not be found. She is able to browse to the directory where the files are located (which is in the building she moved from). She can also access the files when she is logged into a computer in the main building. Can someone offer any suggestions or solutions? Thanx, boyzoid
January 18, 200223 yr The mere fact that "she can browse the directory in which the files are located" is indicative of the fact that a)the network is misconfigured for FileMaker Pro and : that she is about to access the files in an incorrect fashion. Assuming that the files are multi-user and that they are being served by FIleMaker Server, she should use File-->Open Remote-->and enter the IP address of the server in the dialog box. She should then be able to see and to open the files. If there is a router in the way, be sure Port 5003 is open for TCP. HTH Old Advance Man
January 18, 200223 yr Author Newbies Thank you for your quick reply. I checked her ability to browse to rule out a networking problem, not to access the files. I will try your suggestion. Thanx again for posting so quickly. BZ
January 18, 200223 yr Guess I was not clear enough. If she can see the files through the OS networking capability, then the files are in the wrong place. See the FM Server Best practices White paper on the FMI web site. Old Advance Man
January 18, 200223 yr Author Newbies OK.....all the files are multi-user, but we are not running a FileMaker Server. Any other advice? Thanx BZ
January 19, 200223 yr For remote access files MUST be served (opened) by client in small networks or server for larger number of users. Then remote client will open databases with button HOST.
January 21, 200223 yr Author Newbies OK. I've tried everything mentioned (and a few other things that were not). The only thing different is that the user is connecting to the machine which holds the files through a wireless connection. I am very new to FileMaker. I am out of ideas. can anyone please help. Thx BZ
January 22, 200223 yr User should not be connecting to the machine. User should be accessing the files that are hosted on the machine by accessing the LAN/WAN, then entering the hosts name/IP when the Open Remote button is clicked. Get FileMaker Server; it will solve a lot of problems. Old Advance Man
