"... you mean these fans?" Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Hi, I thought I posted this morning, but for some reason I must have clicked the wrong button. I am trying to create a new data row within my export in my .csv export. I have a layout with many fields in a ROW ( April, May, Jun ... Dec ... March ) Each month has five fields. The export records window allow me to drag fields name but not a new line break, hmmm . I need to create new record row for each month. I tried the Code ( 11 ) but it only produces carriage returns within each fields. I need a new row for each month Any help in this manner I would be grateful. I've attached the export window showing were I've placed a field named "Line Return" w / code (11) But this does not work other than placing a carriage return within each fields
comment Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 When you export as CSV, carriage returns are reserved as record delimiters. For this reason, any carriage returns in fields are converted to vertical tabs. I need to create new record row for each month. Why don't you have a record for each month to begin with? It would probably simplify other tasks as well.
"... you mean these fans?" Posted October 2, 2012 Author Posted October 2, 2012 It is a Forecast Table for many regions over in Europe, looking into the Projects Table. Each regions has forecast expectations and then they are compared to their Project date, then everything is summarized by regions, then all Regions are summarized for performance requirements. So, one record ( Region ) carries all the months. Each year, each regions get a new record and new forecast data is enter for the new year.
"... you mean these fans?" Posted October 2, 2012 Author Posted October 2, 2012 "When you export as CSV, carriage returns are reserved as record delimiters. Is a carriage return telling Filemaker to create a new record line on the .csv export or is the vertical tabs So I guess my question, how then do I tell Filemaker I want a new record line relative to the next fields in my export window. Thank you. Tom
comment Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Let me try to restate it more clearly: when you export as CVS, Filemaker will automatically place a carriage return between each record. It will not allow a carriage return to appear in any other place. If an exported field contains a carriage return, Filemaker will replace it with another character in order to avoid confusion. IOW, you cannot tell Filemaker to insert a carriage return in the exported file - at least not when exporting as .csv (or .tab or .mer). OTOH, if you were to normalize your data - i.e. create a separate record for each Region/Month combination - you wouldn't have this problem. You would also have 5 fields where you now have 5*12.
"... you mean these fans?" Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 Hi, Thank you. Since you have a deeper understanding here, could you envision any trouble I may have if I were to graph the data base on your "normalization" ?? in Filemaker's graphing tool ? :-)
