Question about search capability of FileMaker pro

I have been working with FileMaker pro 8 advanced for about 4 yrs now. However, I was not aware how powerful this database was. I have been using it as a database for storing records for an oil company that I work for in Houston Texas. Mostly a static 1-dimensional use. I am able to create most of what I need it to do, such as run sheets for title attorneys & basic record keeping for my own personal use. Most of which I have done using check boxes as a sub sorting tool.

I have signed up for the VTC training, but really only have a very specific need at this point which it looks like from what I have learned so far will require some type of complex script. However, most of your tutorials deal with buttons and things like that which don't seem to be of any help for what I need.

Here is what I need. I have about 500 leases in a table in the database. I figured out how to create another table off of what I have learned from you tutorial. In the second table are other Instruments (called "Assignments") listed as separate records with as part of the record, the leases listed that that particular Assignment will effect.

What I would like to be able to do, is to program is some type of search which would compare the leases, by "Instrument No." listed in a given Assignment in the Assignment Table with all of the leases listed in the Lease Table & if there is a match of the "Instrument No." of the Lease, then list the "Instrument No." of the Assignment in a field I have created in the individual lease in the Lease Table.

Can FileMaker do this?

I would appreciate any help you could give. If you need an example of the database I have, I would be happy to send it to you.

Sincerely,

Peter McCaffrey

Hi Peter,

There is no doubt that FileMaker can be made to do what you want it to. Training courses deal with abstract concepts, you want it applied to your specific solution. My guess is that you'd want to book an hour or two with a local certificed, FMI approved developer to look over your solution and suggest ways of doing what you want done. The www.filemaker.com website will allow you to search for developers in your area/

Please do not multiple post your questions. I have deleted the on you posted to Articles.
