I have a solution that will need to be able to calculate over thousands of records.  Basically I need to be able create stock reports by department for a specific date, but tomorrow I might need it broken down by brand for another date.  I will only know when there is an issue in a particular area, so it will need to be dynamic.  I will have up to 100,000 different lines that will need calculations but the standard method of updating a stock level at point of sale etc will not cut it in this case.

Is there a workaround that to this problem or do I have to bring in the big boys with the Oracle toys to handle this?  It is the only thing holding this solution up, but unless I can get over the problem it will be a deal breaker.

I am not sure I understand your question but you can group and sort by what ever data is in your solution. Use 'summary fields' for total, counts, averages etc which are dynamic and change dependant on the grouping. Specialist calculations as might be required in stock reports are not available in summary fields and would require more effort to get a result.

I am thinking of the time it might take to calculate over for instance up to 50,000 stock records with some related data. I was planning a movements table that could give me stock and sales data for each record while there wold not be huge volumes of related records in the movement table the would be at least 2 for every record., one for delivery one for sale. Some items would have numerous deliveries and numerous sales. These reports would have to be based on this movements table. In order to create the stock report for a particular date then would require me to find movements on or before that date and summarise on the found set. The big question is how long would it take to run this report? Seconds minutes or hours?

On this subject I have been asked to demonstrate the ability to show a stock report for a specified date we will work with it if I can demonstrate the ability to report in a timely fashion. Stock will be taken from a particular date and sales will be from the following month. I will have to show the two reports of stock. In my opinion if I can show a comparison of the two periods in one report the deal will be done. Second thing would be to show the ability to create a dashboard graphically of the difference over a specified time. I know that a visual view of things for these people will make all the difference.

Any hints or ideas would be very welcome.
