Related data changes are lost if parent record is deleted

I was scripting a method to update some related data from the context of the parent, and then delete the parent record.

 

But, what I discovered was the related data fields reverted when the parent was deleted. It had me stumped for while until I used a Commit Record command before deleting the parent.
