How can I script a find of something on a pop up menu when I let go?

I have a large number of topics in a value list. I have a field called "topics" using that value list and I want to know if there is any way to script finding what topic I scroll to in the list when I let go with the mouse.

Scroll to the item and let it perform a find for that topic.?
