ugh.. i have just upgraded to a p4 (is that really an upgrade??) but i noticed that filemaker seems to have some issues... every now and then while I am resizing a box or a field filemaker will go spinning out of control into some sort of internal endless loop which send my entire system halting. it's not really crashed, just eating up CPU cycles so fast I cant get a work in edgewise and have to usually just flip the power to get back to work. of course this corrupts my databases which is always fun.

anyone else having probs with p4 or seen this problem? i worked for years on a p-3 with no major problems... hmmm

thanks!

<Anatoli> You should read the message better. He doesn't say he has used FM5.5 for years.

Anyway... WE run FMPro 5.5 here on a P4 under Windows 2000 pr SP2, 256meg ram, with no real odd ball applications running on Top.

Todate we haven't experienced any crashes as you mention however we did experience and issue with a Network card which sent FM into a spin when accessing a FMServer situated on Windows NT4.

we replaced the Net card with a Win2000 compatible device and it has been fine since.

There is only 5.5 mentioned. If there is something like "i worked for years on a p-3 with no major problems WITH VERSION 5" then I will see that as well. But there is only 5.5 mentioned and later p-3 so I cannot assume another conclusion.

One of my clients has similar problems with a Celeron 800MHz computer(W2k). We only moved the databases to this computer on the weekend, it has crashed everyday, except for one. This is usually when it is accessed through WebCompanion (5.5v3); one or two users only. It also serves three or four FMP clients.

This is FMP (not Server or Unlimited).

Guys thanks for the replies. I guess it's possibly a Filemaker issue -- we'll see, this system is brand new so I expect there will be some kinks to work out. Hopefully FM 6 will be upon us in the not-too-distant future.

As for the network card, well I am using the same Intel 10/100+ Pro adapter that I've had for the last 4 years or so-- never had a hitch with it. I am sure it is win2k/xp compatible. And the time I've experienced this 'loop' bug I am working locally with sharing disabled. Could easily be a graphics card driver issue as well I suppose since it happens when I'm dragging things around. Oh well.. .sigh....

Don't bet on it -- if it's 4 years old, it predates Win2K by at least a couple of years, and as for XP...

well xp has built-in WHQL-driver support for it, that's how I know it's compatible. it even appears on the windows update web site for XP with new drivers.
